Ginger MacCutheon is the owner of Ginger's Pet House, a new store on Brecksville Road in Independence.
INDEPENDENCE -- Ginger MacCutcheon has brought her unique pet boutique, Ginger's Pet House, to
Independence.
Her store carries fun items like stuffed animals, jewelry, frames and toys for those who walk on two or four
legs. After three years in Valley View, she moved to Independence for more space.
The old place was in a warehouse. Her husband owns a commercial cleaning business and she used to work
with him -- that is, until she fell and broke her leg. She wasn't going to be able to work in the field anymore,
and decided to find a new job.
At the same time, the family dog, Muffin, died during the dog food recall of 2006. Muffin inspired
MacCutcheon to open a special store the dog would have loved.
"I thought this place would be ideal," she said. "It's old-fashioned, kind of country-storish and it's right in
the middle of downtown. I was raised in a town that has a small general store and used to shop there all the
time."
The new store will have items not easily found elsewhere.
"I want to find the items no one else has," MacCutcheon said. "I want what's unique. I want to be different.
We're very picky of the types of quality. We want high quality items at a good price for people, a large
variety and something for everyone. You don't have to own a pet to come here and find something."
Muffin lives on in the store, through the Muffin Memorial Fund. In addition to fun, new items, Ginger Pet
House also will sell items that will help pay the medical bills of the Independence Animal Shelter animals.
When certain items are bought, the proceeds are donated to Emerald Animal Hospital in Cleveland to help
animals found by Animal Control Officer Judy Burrier.
MacCutcheon also will have a few cats that need good homes at the store. Anyone interested in adopting them
can fill out an application on the spot.
After Muffin died, MacCutcheon became very interested in natural products.
"We're very into organic and natural things for dogs," she said. "We carry organic shampoos and grain-free
dog foods. It's my responsibility to make sure my customers are getting the right kind of treats and food.
We don't sell cheap garbage."
MacCutcheon won't be only the one greeting customers, either. Her pet Parsons Jack Russell terrier, Alphie,
will be there, along with Christi the cat and hamster Sebastian.
"Ginger has done so much in regard to donating to events in the city, like the dog swim, donated baskets and
helping with judging," said Burrier. "She's just really involved with the city. She's a CERT and VIPs volunteer.
She's always tried to help out with adopting animals.
"I have to keep coming back to her store, because things are never the same. She keeps getting in things
that are so unique and different.
"She carries good quality dog food, not like what you get at the grocery store. It's all-
natural, like I feed my dog. She even carries Sweet Paws Rock Salt, instead of the salt that burns their feet.
I just love this place."
